The study of active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine is a key link in the development and application of traditional Chinese medicine. Structural modification or transformation of the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine is one of the effective ways to develop new drugs. Studies have shown that although D-borneol has shortcomings such as poor solubility, high volatility and bioavailability, it still has a wide range of pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-oxidation. In order to improve its efficiency, in this study, polymers based on D-borneol were designed and synthesized by the modification of hydroxy. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and osmotic gel chromatography were used to determine the structure and molecular weight of the reactants, demonstrating the successful synthesis of acetal reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the D-borneol Polymer had better thermal stability with its decomposition temperature above 350 °C, while D-borneol and diethylene glycol monovinyl ether were about 150 °C. The single factor and orthogonal experimental results showed that the yield of D-borneol Polymer was as high as 71.99±0.44% under the optimal conditions of 4 h reaction time, 0 °C reaction temperature and 10 mg catalyst dosage. The antibacterial activity of hydrophilic polymers was determined by tube double dilution method and K-B disk diffusion method. The effect of D-borneol polymer on the growth state of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was analysed by the change of OD value. Damage of the D-borneol polymer to E. coli and S. aureus cell membrane was tested by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope. Antibacterial experiment results showed that D-borneol polymer was able to significantly inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus by destroying the cell membrane. Therefore, such D-borneol polymer can be used as an alternative in the management of bacteria inhibition.
