The pear pathotype of Botryosphaeria berengeriana causes ring rot disease. An EtOAc extract from the culture filtrate of B. berengeriana pear pathotype was fractionated with n-hexane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, and MeOH. The CH2Cl2-soluble fraction exhibited significant phytotoxic activity and was selected for further detailed purification. Activity-guided fractionation of the active fraction by silica gel column chromatography and reversed-phase HPLC led to the isolation of a phytotoxic compound, which was identified as hiptagenic acid on the basis of spectroscopic methods. Hiptagenic acid as well as the pathogenic fungus induced rot and discoloration of pears.
