Recently, in an effort to improve student engagement in chemistry, our department converted our introductory sequence from the traditional two semesters of general chemistry followed by two semesters of organic chemistry to what is often referred to as the 1-2-1 sequence.  The 1-2-1 sequence is an introductory sequence in which students take one semester of General Chemistry followed by two semesters of Organic Chemistry and then an advanced introductory chemistry course.  The conversion was motivated by the need to implement a curriculum that more effectively addressed our students’ math deficiencies and increase overall student engagement.  Additionally, the transition was made to more effectively utilize the department resources to service chemistry/biochemistry majors and the other related departments. In order to accommodate the transition topics covered in the introductory sequence were redistributed throughout the curriculum.   The impacts on the Organic Chemistry sequence as well as the success and challenges and preliminary assessment data associated with the conversion will be discussed.
