In the year 1992 the United Nations founded the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), recognizing in a major way the incredible and international toll climate change was taking on people groups. Changes in atmospheric CO2 have been linked to several major oceanic phenomena including sea level rise, and increased intensity and frequency of ocean-based storm cells such as hurricanes. Arguably the most vulnerable to these events are low lying island nations like Fiji and Indonesia. This presentation will focus on information gathered at the 25th annual Conference of the Parties (COP25) of the UNFCCC held in Santiago, Chile in December of 2019. There were numerous sessions focused on the challenges faced by island nations where discussions were held with individuals from regions facing similar threats. Information about the threats of Climate change to the livelihoods of people within these countries and what actions their governments plan to take to mitigate these effects will be a significant part of this work. This presentation will display the conclusions drawn from a literature review of the challenges faced by the most vulnerable along with firsthand information and discussions from COP25.
