We report a new method for additive manufacturing (AM) (or 3D printing) by photothermal curing of thermoset resin. This method is designed to combine geometric advantages of vat photopolymerization (stereolithography) with the materials properties of traditional thermosets including high performance urethanes, epoxies, and silicones. Recent reports show controlling the spatial formation of thermoset resins using light input by doping them with photothermal particles. In contrast, we printed “unmodified” thermoset resins on the photothermal plate, which converts light to heat. PDMS resin (commercial Sylgard 184) was tested as a thermoset. A diode laser with wavelength of 808 nm was used to follow a raster pattern, which was controlled by G code. After screening several plastic and metal plates, we chose a black PTFE plate as an optimum photothermal plate for efficient photothermal activities, lower adhesion of cured parts, and localized heat. Samples such as “W” logo, dogbones, flowers, and cylinders were printed. Tensile testing of the dogbone samples was compared with that of molded samples. We are currently working on improving resolutions, better controlling the Z direction, and printing other resins, such as urethanes.
