Lithium ion transport in polymer electrolytes is a continuous challenge in developing solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium ion batteries. Typical SPEs are composed of lithium salt dissolved in a polymer host, such as poly(ethylene oxide), PEO. Earlier studies primarily focused on lithium ion transport mechanisms in salt-doped PEO-based materials. Recently, poly(ionic liquids) (PILs), which are a polymeric form of ionic liquids (ILs), have been explored as SPEs. PILs possess a number of unique physicochemical properties, such as high ionic conductivity, high chemical, and thermal stability, nonflammability, and widely tunable chemistry. Moreover, block copolymers with PILs as the ion-containing block result in orthogonal properties, i.e., high mechanical modulus and ion transport within the same single polymer. Previous studies indicate that lithium ion transport mechanisms in lithium salt-doped PIL block copolymers depend on the polymer segmental motion of the conducting phase, the block copolymer morphology, the physicochemical properties of the ion pair, and the delocalization of the ion charges. The design and optimization of PIL block copolymers for practical battery applications require a clear understanding of the controlling parameters of these properties. In this study, the ion transport properties of a lithium salt-doped PIL diblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-vinylbenzylmethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) (PS-b-PVBMIm-TFSI) will be discussed. The role of cation and anion chemistry, salt concentration, and morphology on lithium ion transport in this PIL diblock copolymer was explored with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, galvanostatic polarization, pulse field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PFG-NMR), and lithium stripping and plating.
