Current chemical treatments of cancerous cells have come great strides since their initial development and can now focus on minimizing adverse side effects while still treating the affliction. To this end, phytochemicals have been seeing an increased push in drug development and have already seen promising results in natural products revolving around caffeic cinnamic acid. One of the logical first steps in cancer growth treatment is its prevention as oxidative stress and inflammation are being shown to have linkages with the development of cancerous cells. This is where the antioxidation and anti-inflammation properties of many similar phytochemicals are becoming higher interest targets amongst research teams. While caffeic acid alone shows effective results alone, incorporating additional chemicals into its mechanisms has shown higher inhibition rates of proteins tied to abnormal cellular division and inflammation. From this concept, using various derivatives of caffeic acid may suppressing those same proteins caffeic acid already inhibits itself with increased effectiveness without raising harmful side effects. Cyclooxygenase type-1 (COX-1) and type-2 (COX-2) are currently proteins of interest with shown contributions to both carcinogenesis and inflammation in breast. We are running protein binding simulations with various interesting caffeic acid derivatives and cross referencing the most promising with isothermal titration calorimetry and gel electrophoresis with the intent on verifying the model’s validity. Once promising derivatives have been found, we will then move forward into testing directly with cancerous cells.
