Carbohydrate based low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) and their self-assembling properties have gained significant interest over recent years. In previous studies, we had designed and synthesized several monosaccharide derivatives and obtained useful structure-gelation property relationships. In this study, in order to further understand the structural influence towards molecular self-assemblies and obtain acid responsive LMWGs, a series of ten para-methoxybenzylidene acetal functionalized D-glucosamine derivatives containing carbamate functional groups were synthesized and characterized. Several new D-glucosamine derivatives formed stable gels in aqueous and organic solutions. The gel morphologies were characterized using optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The stimuli-responsive properties of the resulting soft-materials are being evaluated for different applications. In this presentation, the synthesis and characterization of these carbamates and their effectiveness as LMWGs will be discussed.  <br/>
