The Reaction Coordinate Diagram Inventory (RCDI) was developed as an assessment tool to quantitatively measure chemistry students’ thinking and confidence when interpreting the kinetic and thermodynamic information encoded with reaction coordinate diagrams (RCDs).<br/>All questions and distractors on the RCDI were designed via a sequential, mixed-methods protocol using qualitative data from semi-structured interviews of general chemistry and organic chemistry students in order to ensure the items were grounded in students’ reasoning. A longitudinal study was designed to collect RCDI assessment data from students at the end of second-semester general chemistry, the beginning of first-semester organic chemistry, and the end of first-semester organic chemistry. Preliminary findings for the use of the RCDI to measure misconceptions over time will be presented.
