Supramolecular chemistry, along with other macromolecular topics, has been identified as a deficiency in many undergraduate chemistry programs. Inspired by this, we recently explored the synthesis of a supramolecular host in a chemistry and biochemistry majors-only sophomore organic chemistry lab. In addition to studying the host:guest properties of these in a scripted fashion, the molecular capsules were subsequently adapted to serve as catalysts in a cycloaddition reaction that is essentially unknown. The students were give a prompt, then charged with finding relevant literature and defining a synthetic approach before applying it in teams in the organic lab. Learning outcomes and limited assessment will be discussed as it relates to this activity.
