Copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) is a widely used post-polymerization modification method and poly(propargyl methacrylate) (PPMA) is one of the great candidates for utilizing CuAAC to tailor its side chain structures. Unfortunately, propargyl methacrylate is not compatible with radical polymerization processes, so the protected monomer was used instead. Poly(trimethylsilyl propargyl methacrylate) (PTMSPMA) was synthesized via Activator ReGenerated by Electron Transfer Atom Transfer Polymerization (ARGET ATRP) and the product polymers can be made from DP=100 up to DP=600 with narrow polydispersity (1.15-1.27). Backbone length and side chain structures of the polymer products can be tailored precisely when combining ATRP with CuAAC. One of our interests is to use the polymers after CuAAC as stabilizers to enhance the enzymatic activity in organic solvents, in which enzymes normally have very low activity. The model enzyme, polymer-protected Subtilisin Carlsberg, showed 10 fold more active than their unprotected counterpart in toluene.
