In addition to its ability to catalyze low-temperature CO oxidation, Au catalysts are also versatile selective oxidation catalysts.  Based on available information, it can be postulated that the high selectivity is due to the weak interaction of oxygen molecule with Au, resulting in associative adsorption with retention of the O-O bond.  The process may be facilitated at the interfacial perimeter sites.  In liquid phase oxidation, this could lead to oxidation reactions involving free radicals.<br/>
