Low temperature selective catalytic aerobic alcohol oxidation is of economic importance. The product of alcohol oxidation often contains small amounts of H2O2. Often in many of the proposed mechanisms for alcohol oxidation, H2O2 generation is included explicitly or implicitly as part of the catalytic cycle. The low levels of H2O2 detected is ascribed to be a consequence of side reactions such as decomposition of H2O2 and/or H2O2 reaction with the organic reactant and/or products. It is important to establish a quantitative link between alcohol consumed and H2O2 produced not only for a deeper understanding of the alcohol oxidation but also to examine the possibility of using alcohol oxidation as a means of in situ generation of H2O2. Many wastewater stream such as those found in winery contains a high concentration of alcohol which may potentially be used to produced H2O2 for water remediation. In our study, we tried to link the two reactions by focusing on obtaining accurate initial kinetics for alcohol consumption and H2O2 production over Au/C catalyst at different pH’s, concentrations of alcohol and amounts of catalyst. H2O2 decomposition and H2O2 reactions with organic products/reactant were also studied. Together with H2O2 production from known intermediates of alcohol oxidation as well as product inhibition studies we were able to generate a deeper understanding of the relationship between the two reactions
