Last school year, our ACS chapter continued its legacy of green chemistry education both on and off Gordon’s campus. Our 16th Annual Green Chemistry Lecture was a highlight of the year for students, faculty, and community members, and featured Dr. John Warner in honor and celebration of the 20th anniversary of the publication of his book Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice. Our chapter also collaborated with the General Chemistry Honors Lab students to lead two green chemistry events: a table of green chemistry activities at the Essex Elementary School STEM Night, and a Green Soap-Making event on Gordon College’s campus, where participants learned about a greener saponification process and made their own bar of soap. In addition, we welcomed New Hope Tutorial, a community of home-schooled high school students, to our lab facilities to complete green chemistry lab activities led by our chapter. Off campus, we continued our partnership with the Oliver Partnership School in Lawrence, MA, where we hosted three Science Clubs after school with green chemistry activities. We also completed our third annual trip to New York City, where we visited students at Pono and taught them about ocean plastics and made edible, biodegradable water pods. These activities demonstrate our student chapter’s commitment to educating a wide-ranging demographic about the wonders of green chemistry.
