Herein, we report a greener protocol for the synthesis of C-5 chalcogenation (Se/S) of imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles through direct C(sp2)-H functionalization using molecular iodine as catalyst and diorganoyl dichalcogenides under solvent free conditions. This approach afforded the desired products regioselectively in up to 94 % yields using an equivalent amount of DMSO as an oxidant in the absence of a metal catalyst and in an inert atmosphere. The reaction features are high yields, based on atom economy, ease of scale-up to gram scale, and metal- and solvent-free approach.
