The particle in the box is a model of an electron that is free to move with a small set of barriers. The box allows for energy levels to be between homo and lumo levels. The particle in the box model can  be viewed in one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions, allowing for many things to be observed and studied with this model. A series of polymethine dyes were studied using a one-dimensional box. Then a paramatizing method was done to determine the length of the box. For this series the electron moved from the nitrogen on one side of the molecule to the nitrogen on the other side of the molecule. To further test the method, three other dyes were studied and looked at further for the effectiveness, cost, and safety aspects. Another property to study is the oscillator strength, symbolized by f, which indicates transition intensity. Previous work in this laboratory yielded inconsistent results for these values. This study will attempt to explain the inconsistencies.<br/>
