Semiconductors are essential in the fabrication of many optical and electrical devices. Due to enhanced optical and electrical properties in nanoscale semiconducting materials, research has shifted from bulk materials to quantum dots (QDs). Many studies on direct-gap semiconducting QDs, such as CdSe and PbS, have been conducted, but these materials exhibit extremely high toxicity compared to Group IV materials, hindering practical applications in biomedical and advanced technological studies. Unfortunately, Group IV semiconductors have an indirect bandgap, diminishing light-interaction efficiency. To mitigate this, quantum confinement effects and the incorporation of tin have been investigated to successfully produce direct-gap, tunable Ge1-XSnX alloyed QDs. These QDs exhibit high absorption and photoluminescent efficiency, and improved electrical properties. However, utilization of these enhanced properties for practical applications requires deposition of these QDs onto thin films. To create conducting, uniform thin films from these colloidally stable QDs, a ligand exchange with a conducting metal chalcogenide (MCC), has been performed on the oleylamine-capped QDs. These particles were compared with unexchanged QDs to probe the effects of the exchange on crystal structure, size, composition and energy gaps. Following a successful ligand exchange, the MCC-capped QDs were spin-coated onto glass substrates producing conducting QD thin films. Herein, we will discuss the effect of the ligand exchange and deposition parameters on morphology, crystal structure, composition, thickness, and electrical conductivity of GexSn1-x QD thin films.
