Nitric oxide (NO), a vasodilator, has been found to increase blood flow to the site of tissue damage and consequently enhances the rate of tissue repair. A wound care patch was developed through electrospinning using a 9% (w/w) Tecophilic®(TP), a thermoplastic polyurethane, in ethanol as the base polymer. The patch consisted of several layers: two layers consisted of TP/super absorbent polymer (SAP), another layer consisted of TP/cellulose/ascorbic acid, and the final layer contained TP/Dowex-NO2. The patches were quantified using a nitric oxide analyzer. The electrospinning setup was adjusted to an electrospraying setup, but after the patches were found to not release a standard amount of NO, an electrospinning setup with a syringe was used. The syringe dispenses 3 mL per layer at a rate of 0.5 mL/ min. The amount of NO released from a 1 cm by 3 cm patch is 79 ± 6 µmol NO.
