Heterogeneous catalysis plays a central role in sustainable synthetic chemistry. Previously, we have shown that iron-doped, nickel-based layered double hydroxide ([NiFe]-LDH) catalysts exhibit low overpotentials and high selectivity for water oxidation. Of key importance is the finding that multiple oxidation states of iron exist in nonaqueous media. In this work, we report selective hydrocarbon oxidation using such a water oxidation catalyst in non-aqueous media. Utilizing flow chemistry, high conversion is observed for the selective oxidation of toluene and other substrates. Different products are favored depending on the applied potential. We are actively working on developing this technology for use in synthesizing fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
