Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent with 6.4 million new reported cases in 2017. RelMtb is an enzyme in Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is crucial for the survival of TB. An analog of guanosine was synthesized and found to inhibit RelMtb. Fluorescently tagged variants of this molecule are synthesized to provide chemical tools to assist further studies on this enzyme using fluorescent microscopy. These molecules are synthesized in a series of organic synthesis steps using N-Isobutyrylguanosine as starting material. Click chemistry is used to attach the fluorescent probes to the molecule. Following purification and spectral analysis, fluorescent microscopy and antibacterial testing will be performed in M. tuberculosis and other bacteria.
