Propylene is a building block for the production of various commodities of chemicals such as polypropylene, cumene, and many more. An alternative to the steam cracking process is an efficient and cost-effective dehydrogenation process for the production of olefins. The dehydrogenation process is commercialized by two giants, namely UOP and ABB Lummus. The catalysts used by these processes are Pt-Sn/K-Al2O3(UOP) and Cr2O3/(K,Na)-Al2O3. Cobalt oxide-based catalysts were reported to be an active catalyst for both oxidative and non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation reaction. Co/Al2O3has shown to be active for propane conversion to propylene however suffers from faster deactivation due to coke deposition. The leading cause of coke formation was due to the presence of an excess of Lewis acidic sites. Additionally, the lower metal support interaction leads to the complete conversion of CoO to metallic cobalt during the reaction. Herein, this study focused on developing a catalytic system to prevent the reduction of CoO. The one-pot synthesis method was used to prepare CoO-ySiO2-Al2O3, where y represents the SiO2doping ratio. Using the optimal ratio of SiO2doping in the mixed oxide, propane conversion of 35% with 92% propylene selectivity can be achieved at 600°C. In contrast, the CoO-Al2O3showed lower propylene selectivity of ~80%. The characterization technique such as XANES, and HRTEM analysis showed the formation of well-dispersed cobalt oxide with non-redox properties. The presence of Bronsted acidic center evident from pyridine DRIFTS analysis (Figure1) helped to stabilize the CoO nanoparticles in the mixed oxide matrix prevented the formation of metallic cobalt during the reaction. With the novel approach of doping heteroatom in CoO-Al2O3, a promising performance was achieved for propane dehydrogenation reaction.
