Polymers embedded with metal nanoparticles have been extensively studied for their application as catalysts, electroluminescent devices, and optical and electrochemical sensors. Silver polymer nanocomposites are known for antimicrobial activity, and are commercialized for their distinguishing electrical, optical (SERS-Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering), and excellent stable chemical and catalytic effects. Rhodanine (Rh) and its derivatives have higher sensitivity and selectivity towards some metals, show elevated corrosion inhibition properties, are antibacterial, anti-diabetic, anti-viral, antimicrobial, antihistaminic and HVC inhibitor. In our lab we have successfully synthesized polyrhodanine (pRh) nano/micro spheres by an oxidation reduction reaction with metals Pd (II) and Cu (II). These core shell structures are first green synthesis of a facile, single step process where metal salts are the oxidizing agent and we have shown 80% degradation of MO (Methyl Orange dye) in 3 hrs via adsorption when treated with Cu0-polyrhodanine nanocomposite. With Ag(I) ions Rh is known to generate pRh nanotubes and nano fibres/Ag0 which exhibit high antimicrobial efficacy against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and yeast. The self-assembled porous pRh in two different morphological forms (nano-micro spheres and nano-microtubes) immobilized with nano metals of Ag0, Cu0 and Pd0 represent good candidates for catalytic reactions. We have investigated pRh-metal (Ag0/Cu0/Pd0) composites catalyzed reduction of p-nitro phenol to p-amino phenol. The reaction was easily monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy at 400nm. Alloys of Ag/Pd are know where surface enhancement of Pd is detected by SERS. The standard reduction potential of Ag+ ion is 0.80 V and Pd+2 is 0.95 V, however surface tension of Ag is 0.93 J/m2 while Pd is 1.50 J/m2. These thermodynamic properties are in favor of formation of Pd nanoparticles over Ag, however in reality Ag nano particles are formed faster than Pd. This leads to inhomogeneous bimetallic Ag/Pd alloys where Ag is rich in the core and Pd rich at surface. We have investigated Ag/Pd alloy structures with Rh (using different molar ratios of silver nitrate/palladium acetate) and their effects on the morphology of the generated pRh nanocomposites.
