Population growth and increasing technological demands warrant sustainable power sources that do not adversely affect the climate. Although commercial photovoltaics can produce sufficient localized power from sunlight, differences between peak generation and usage necessitate reliable options for energy storage. Lithium-ion batteries are currently the gold standard for electrical storage systems. Although widely commercialized, lithium-ion technology has not seen wide use in large scale energy storage applications. Metal-air batteries (eg. Zn-air and Sn-air) are promising alternative energy storage devices with high specific capacity and energy density. These batteries utilize cheap, Earth abundant metals and react with atmospheric oxygen during the discharge process, making them ideal for widespread use. Iridium based photosensitizers can drive the uphill two electron reduction of metal salts, including Zn2+ and Sn2+, presenting an opportunity to photo-generate anode material in metal-air batteries. Electronic properties of iridium complexes are readily tuned through manipulation of the ligand environment. This work employs high-throughput screening techniques to determine structure/function relationships of heteroleptic [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]+ photosensitizers towards Sn2+ reduction, where C^N are anionic cyclometalating ligands and N^N is an ancillary bipyridyl derivative. Calculated reaction rates are correlated with photophysical data such as emission spectra and excited state lifetimes. This research aims to both accelerate the search for optimal photocatalysts in metal salt reduction and to elucidate features pertinent to photocatalytic activity.
