Recent work has shown that the properties of conjugated polymers such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) can be modified by appending various moieties to the side of the alkoxy ring. Previous work from our group has focused on the unique properties of EDOT-carboxylic acid which has shown to have increased water solubility in both the monomeric and polymeric state, while retaining high charge transport capability.  Our current work has focused on a variety of novel functional groups including aldehyde, dopamide, tyramine, and maleimide.  Changing the side group functionality has lead to new families of PEDOT-based materials with modified optical, electronic, and mechanical properties. Of the functionalities that have been developed, maleimide has proven to exhibit particularly fast reaction kinetics with the ability for further reactivity. Maleimide is both thermally crosslinkable and open to click chemistry with functional thiols. This provides a facile method for increased functionality both pre- and post- polymerization. The morphological, physical, chemical, and kinetic characterization of these materials with optical and electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and other techniques will be discussed and compared with the PEDOT homopolymer.<br/>
