Carbon Digital Light SynthesisTM (DLS) technology is a software-driven polymer additive manufacturing process featuring a unique ‘dual-cure’ materials platform that has opened new opportunities for the creation of better materials for a wide range of product applications. DLS uses software-controlled chemistry—wherein photopolymerization takes place directly in the machine—to form parts continuously, rapidly, and at scale. Once the UV cure occurs, which sets the shape of parts produced with DLS, parts then undergo a thermal cure to set the properties. The ‘dual-cure’ platform addresses longstanding limitations preventing additive from being used for true manufacturing applications. With the ‘dual-cure’ approach, Carbon has developed a range of new materials that can meet the specific manufacturing needs of product teams in diverse industries. Carbon resins can be formulated for energy absorption, energy return, heat resistance, impact tolerance, and other properties. Examples of Carbon ‘dual-cure’ materials include silicones; ductile polyurethanes; elastomeric polyurethanes; a medical-grade, biocompatible and sterilizable polyurethane; and rigid, high-temperature materials including epoxies and cynate esters. The incorporation of both UV and thermally curable functionalities into resins for additive manufacturing is a milestone in the industry and has already proven to have vast utility for the creation of more robust, and previously unmakeable, polymer products using Carbon DLS. The rapid production of commercial quality parts—with properties that compare to injection molded parts—is now possible, and Carbon materials are now used with DLS for production in industries including footwear, dental, medical, protective gear, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods.
