A lanthanide-doped dibarium magnesium oxide phosphor incorporated into a VUV optically transparent matrix, such as a magnesium fluoride, will be presented.  Silicon-based CMOS and CCD detectors coated with a thick Lumogen layer is the current state of the art in high-energy sensitized detectors. A high quantum yield inorganic phosphor may provide enhanced advantages over Lumogen, such as tunable emission wavelength and lower production costs. By altering the dopants of the silica glass, we have been able to tune the emission wavelength and fluorescent properties. We have developed a new synthetic sol-gel route to produce VUV transparent films using lower sintering temperatures and time. VUV absorption profile and the fluorescent quantum yield as a function of excitation wavelength of the lanthanide-doped ceramic films will be compared to vapor-deposited Lumogen on VUV transparent supports in order to determine the viability of replacing an organic fluorophor with a more robust inorganic technology option.
