The development of new materials for use in fluorescent and phosphorescent organic light emitting devices (OLEDs and PHOLEDs) continues to inspire interest in novel organometallic complexes that might have potentially unique photophysical properties. Our group has been working on applying the tenets of Green Chemistry to existing literature protocols for various coupling reactions in order to reduce additives and by-products while yielding bi- and polyaromatic molecules for use as ligands in transition metal complexes. So far, we have had limited success (as previously reported). Recently, we have decided on a different strategy: starting with known “greener” protocols, we are working to broaden the scope of these reactions and use them as a starting point for developing new synthetic routes to molecules that may lead to unexpected properties and chemical reactivity when coordinated to metals. To date, we have synthesized substituted α,β-diketones, quinoxalines, benzoquinoxalines, and pyrazines, and have completed some preliminary studies of their metal complexation reactions, all utilizing methods with enhanced adherence to the tenets of Green Chemistry. Details of the syntheses, greener aspects of the reactions, and characterization of products will be presented.
