Poppy seeds and their respective products are known to contain several opiate compounds. These metabolites can be extracted and quantified by a variety of techniques. Morphine is the focus of this study and methods are currently being developed to isolate this compound via methanol digestion followed by a liquid-liquid extraction. The extract will be subjected to further purification so that morphine can be quantified and characterized by GC-MS. Verification of the opiates extracted by this method will be made in part by TLC analysis of the extract and opiate standards. The primary goal of this investigation is to evaluate the threshold and specificity of morphine for spot drug tests in hopes that this kind of test can be used in a court of law.<br/>
