Molten salts are a growing area of interest in the nuclear field for use as coolants in molten salt reactors and for pyroprocessing of nuclear materials. The production of gaseous products from these systems, however, needs to be monitored to prevent the release of potentially toxic gases to the environment. I-129 in particular, has a long half-life and its toxicity and persistence in the environment makes iodine and iodine-containing compounds of great concern in molten salt systems.  Raman spectroscopy is an ideal tool for monitoring and quantifying these off-gas products. Iodine has a strong and distinct Raman signature and the change in signal with a change in concentration can be used for the development of calibration curves for the quantification of these products. Here, we discuss our recent work on the quantification of iodine off-gas products using Raman spectroscopy.
