Ventilation air methane (VAM) is a major greenhouse contributor to mining and to decrease associated environmental impacts, catalytic combustion of methane has been suggested as a feasible technology, however water vapor and coke formation decrease catalyst activity via the formation of surface hydroxyl groups. The current paper examines the deactivation of catalysts and potential methods for in situ regeneration.<br/>Light-off curves and kinetic analysis show that in all cases, the introduction of water vapour resulted in a decrease in catalyst activity. While the deactivation noted over hydrophobic zeolitic supports was minimal, there was a considerable decrease over Al2O3. It was found that high Si/Al zeolites enhanced catalyst hydrophobicity leading to weaker interactions between H2O vapor and adsorption sites. The increased adsorption on the more hydrophilic Al2O3 results in an increased adsorption of water blocking surface sites for oxygen adsorption, indicating that catalyst activity is directly related to support acidity.<br/>It has been shown that the decrease in catalyst activity caused by the presence of water vapour can be reversed by exposing the bed to regenerative gases. The relative effectiveness of the different regenerative gases examined allows for the use of a continuous pulse system, whereby operating with short, frequent pulses of oxygen-containing gases results in an enhanced catalyst stability and extended operation maintaining high methane conversion.
