Chemical garden reactions are well-known for their ability to produce a wide variety of strikingly different macroscopic structures from the same chemical reaction. One version that has been less studied is the upward-pointing liquid-injected chemical garden reaction, in which a less-dense salt solution (copper(II) sulfate, in this case) is injected into a more-dense sodium silicate solution. The resulting reaction generates a membrane of copper(II) silicate, and this membrane differs greatly depending upon the injection rate and the injected copper(II) sulfate concentration. We present preliminary evidence of four different precipitation behaviors and some initial analyses of these behaviors.
