Polymer latexes have been used as coating binder in different coating industries for adhesion of coating components and providing strength for the final coating after drying. In addition, latexes affect the rheology of the coating dispersion. Emulsion-polymerization is the most widely employed method to produce latexes. The stability of these latexes is primarily provided by electrostatic repulsion of surfactants that may cause foaming problem in the coating process. In this research suspension polymerized (SP) latexes with different acrylic acid contents were prepared. Steric protection of the latexes were provided by a protective shell consisted of starch and PVA. The viscosity, particle size, zeta potential and viscoelastic behavior of the latexes as a function of pH were investigated. Surface tension and foaming tendency of the latexes were evaluated. These latexes were used as a coating cobinder in a calcium carbonate and clay disperse system. The viscoelastic properties, surface tension and foaming tendency of the coating dispersions were studied. Acrylic acid monomer was found to be an important factor affecting viscosity, particle size and zeta potential of SP latexes. SP latexes generated less foam compared with emulsion-polymerized latex. Moreover, as a result of partial substitution of styrene-butadiene (S/B) latex with SP latexes in coating color, the viscoelastic properties of coating color was influenced.
