The mining and milling chemistry of uranium is complicated and an intensive process, yet many of the compound intermediates are poorly understood. Compounds such as uranium(IV) sulfate, which comes from the dissolution of uranium-bearing ore with sulfuric acid, performed, for example, in situ mining. Such mining techniques often dissolve other metals, the interaction of such metals with uranium compounds has only recently become of interest. Herein, we describe the use of single x-ray diffraction to study the interaction of the trivalent lanthanides and the divalent transition metals with uranium sulfate. Single x-ray diffraction (SCXRD) provides information on the speciation and assembly of uranium sulfate as a function of the hetero-metal ion. The use of SCXRD has allowed discovering three new family structure types. Each family-type structure is a framework comprised of uranium-oxo sulfate clusters. The size and assembly of the clusters is depended upon the hetero-metal ion, as seen by SCXRD. Additional characterizations have also been used; magnetic susceptibility has been used to study the new crystals structures in order to elucidate any structure-property relationship. Small-angle x-ray scattering has been used to determine the solubility and stability of the new uranium-oxo clusters. Other characterization techniques include vibrational spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV-Visible light spectroscopy. We report the characterization, primarily SCRXD, to expand the aqueous chemistry of uranium(IV) sulfate by studying its interaction with other metals and crystallizing the resulting effects.
