Identifying optimal solvents for liquid phase reactions occurring on the surface of solid catalysts could be challenging, as guiding principles in how solvents affect the rate and the product distribution remain elusive. Most attempts to understand solvent effects involve screening multiple solvent choices via catalytic activity testing, which rarely leads to predictive insights of the optimal solvent for future reactions. Novel liquid phase experimental techniques are needed to provide insights into how solvent affects adsorption, transport, and phase equilibria, especially in non-ideal, porous materials where modelling techniques have difficulty capturing the complexity of the system. In this work, we show that attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is able to quantitatively determine adsorption isotherms of pyridine on porous materials in the presence of liquid solvents. The solvent effects on the confinement and protonation of pyridine in porous materials are deconvoluted.
