Halogenated arenes are bioactive targets and valuable synthetic intermediates found in a diverse range of applications. Our research group and others have recently shown that halogenation of arenes can be enhanced through visible light photocatalysis (VLPC) in which lower energy wavelengths of light are used to initiate single electron transfer (SET) reactions. In our previous studies, we have shown that organic dyes can be used as efficient and economical SET initiators, and that the reduction potential of the VLPC organic dye can be used as a property to predict reactivity by comparison to the oxidation potential of the halogenating agent. Using this strategy, analytical methods such as flourescence emission and cyclic voltammetry can be utilized to determine the potential effectiveness of organic dyes as VLPCs. Our progress towards the determination of these properties from a set of organic dyes previously unreported as VLPCs will be reported.
