Zinc oxide nanoparticles have many properties and a wide range of biomedical applications such as antibacterial, antifungal and drug delivery. This study is focused on the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO Nps) and their preparation in a polymer matrix to increase their drug release ability. Synthesis and preparation of ZnO Nps was carried out in the laboratory using zinc acetate and sodium hydroxide through chemical precipitation method. We successfully achieved the synthesis of stable ZnO Nps. These particles were characterized by UV-Vis, Dynamic Light Scattering, and FTIR spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The absorbance band was centered at 366 nm. By adjusting kinetic parameters, we obtained a variety of ZnO Nps sizes from 16 nm to 46 nm. Evaluation of the fluorescence of the particles was performed by fluorescence spectroscopy and with a UV transilluminator. The emission obtained colors were blue (around 480 nm), green (540 nm) and yellow (650 nm). We chose the 26.2 nm ZnO Nps to perform the drug encapsulation. For the drug delivery application, curcumin was added to zinc oxide crystals at different volumes to study the encapsulation process. The encapsulations were evaluated every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Past 24 hours of the encapsulation process, the capsules with mayor volume absorbed 45% of the drug, however the capsules with lower volume absorbed 100% of the drug. The drug release is an ongoing study, and we are working on sodium alginate polymer-based matrix to increase the release of the drugs.
