The applications of primary amido-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in ruthenium and nickel catalysis have been studied. By using this series of ligand, we hope to develop catalysts that have good stability under aerobic conditions. Currently, progress is being made toward the synthesis of half-sandwich ruthenium complexes featuring this class of ligand. Future studies will focus on applying these complexes to base-free transfer hydrogenation. Additionally, our group’s previously reported nickel complexes featuring primary amido-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been applied to the catalytic hydrogen-deuterium exchange reaction between mildly acidic carbon-hydrogen bonds and deuterium oxide. An investigation of the substrate scope of this hydrogen-deuterium exchange reaction is currently underway.
