Laboratory safety training is required for practical reasons and under various government rules and regulations. The American Chemical Society actively promotes the use of the acronym known as R.A.M.P. as a tool in hazard recognition and risk control in laboratory safety training, where R.A.M.P. stands for Recognize hazards, Assess the risks of hazards, Minimize the risk of hazards, and Prepare for emergencies. The Safety Training Consortium (STC) is a higher education membership organization founded by research universities for the purpose of developing safety training for the research community. STC operates under the auspices of the University of California's Center for Laboratory Safety. The development of useful training material on hazard recognition and risk control is a priority of the STC. The STC has developed a web-based, multimedia introductory course to R.A.M.P. using the ACS approach. To complement this introduction, the STC is further developing a series of short subject courses on numerous laboratory safety topics. Taken together, the idea is to develop and then continually add new or revised short courses to be taken along with the introductory R.A.M.P. course. This presentation highlights two short subject R.A.M.P. courses that were developed in parallel by the STC: high pressure reactor vessels and low pressure systems commonly used in chemical synthesis laboratories. The next step" approach to laboratory safety training will be discussed. Using an efficient, topic-based approach is expected to further the understanding of subjects that logically follow a general introduction to laboratory safety.
