The future of nuclear research and its respective areas of study (nuclear power, particle physics, etc.) depends on the improvement of solid-state targets available to researchers. Existing methods for producing targets typically result in high impurities with low efficiencies and accuracies. Current research shows that a solution combustion synthesis (SCS) process is a viable means of achieving highly pure targets with uniform thickness and stability. A series of bulk combustion reactions have been carried out using uranyl nitrate as an oxidant with glycine, diglycine and glycine anhydride as the reducing agents. Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction were used to characterize initial U(VI) complexes. Conversion of the bulk material to UO2+x is observed with all three reductant systems. Activation energies were obtained using Kissinger analysis from thermogravimetric analysis differential scanning calorimetry. Conversion studies of the U(VI) complexes to UO2+x was used in exploring the mechanism for combustion of the uranyl nitrate system to better tune future reactions to desired oxide phases.
