<br/>Reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization is one of several synthetic approaches to controlling the molecular weight and length of polymer chains. The RAFT mechanism takes advantage of a small molecule called a chain transfer agent that facilitates the transfer of active radicals during radical chain growth polymerizations. This equilibrium process effectively controls the rate of monomer addition during the polymerization allowing for controlled polymer chain lengths. Since this process occurs by fragmentation of a labile bond within the chain transfer agent, the end-groups of polymer chains prepared by a RAFT process depend on the functional groups of the chain transfer agent. This work presents a strategy for end-group modification of RAFT polymers through chemical modification of chain transfer agents prior to polymerization. By first synthesizing nucleoside-conjugated chain transfer agents, this work demonstrates that synthetic polymers with controlled molecular weight and nucleoside end-groups can be polymerized by a RAFT mechanism.<br/>
