A novel and facile methodology for the synthesis and purification of α-nitro chalcones is described. The one-pot Knoevenagel reaction has been expanded and optimized to include cyano, fluoro, ester, bromo, chloro and keto chalcones. Previously, attempts to synthesize nitro chalcones has proven difficult due to the stability of a six-member ring intermediate, but recent developments involving an excess of aldehyde has yielded the desired chalcones. Utilizing a simple bisulfite wash to rid the reaction of excess aldehyde has led to a variety of chalcones in varying yield. A methodology for the purification of α-keto chalcones is also described.
