Multivalent ion batteries have gained significant research interests in recent years due to their potential in achieving high energy density systems. One challenge in this field is to develop both reductively and oxidatively stable electrolytes that efficiently support metal deposition and cation insertion. Previous work has highlighted the development of a weakly-coordinated perfluoroalkoxyaluminate salt as an electrolyte for high-voltage magnesium-ion batteries. Through computational and experimental studies, the extended electrolyte stability window in triglyme was attributed to a balanced ion-association and anion-solvent interactions. In this presentation, we describe our efforts to apply the strategies of using weakly coordinated systems to other divalent metal-ions such as calcium and zinc.
