The copper catalyzed formation of aryl-alkyl ethers was first reported by Fritz Ullmann in 1905 and is now known as the Ullmann ether synthesis. Modern copper catalyzed protocols most often require aryliodides as starting campounds. We have been exploring a copper catalyzed domino reaction that starts with arylbromides in the presence of catalytic KI and affords the aryl-alkyl ether. We will report on our progress at optimizing our protocol by developing ethylene diamine ligand systems that maximize ether formation while minimizing reduction via beta-hydride transfer, as well as on our efforts to explore the scope of this process.
