Shoal grass, sp. Halodule Wrightii, inhabits the Gulf of Mexico, where it provides nutrients and habitat to a variety of marine species. However, seagrasses are susceptible to environmental stressors such as high sediment sulfide concentrations, a known phytotoxin. It has been shown that H. wrightii can cope with high sulfide levels through metabolic assimilation. We used a liquid chromatography - Orbitrap Fusion™ Tribrid™ mass spectrometer to obtain metabolomic profiles from root, rhizome, and leaf tissue of H. Wrightii growing in sulfidic sediments. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the profiles demonstrated a difference in metabolite content between tissue types. This supports the hypothesis that sulfur metabolic pathways differ among H. Wrightii tissues. It represents the first step in characterizing tissue-specific, sulfur metabolic pathways in seagrasses.
