Recently, we reported an iron(II) tetraazaporphyrin (TAP) that reversibly binds CO but surprisingly shows no measurable O<sub>2</sub> affinity – in sharp contrast to hemoproteins and all previously reported analogs, including planar iron(II) TAPs.  These unique properties appear to derive from a positively shifted iron (II/III) redox potential and suggest developing this material into a reversible colorimetric sensor for CO.  In order to explore this hypothesis further we have synthesized iron(II) octaperfluorophenyltetraazaporphyrin.  We report here our synthesis and characterization of this material as well as electrochemical studies.   We further report ligand binding studies for this macrocycle and associated equilibrium constants and compare them to those of structurally similar iron(II) porphyrins and tetraazaporphyrins.
