Cation exchange, the replacement of one cation with another cation, is a powerful method to synthesize complex particle systems by varying cations. The use of oxidizing agents to accelerate cation exchange was the main focus of this study. Through treatment with iodine, an oxidizing agent, the amount of cadmium and zinc that is incorporated into Cu2-xS nanoparticles increased compared to the control. This effect was compared between nanorods and nanoplatelets of roxbyite Cu2-xS. Similar effects were observed where the Cd/Cu ratio gradually increased as the amount of iodine exposure increased.To fully understand the effects of the I2 fully, the change in plasmonic behavior in response to I2 was examined over the time scale of the cation exchange experiments. As the iodine treatment creates vacancies in the nanoplatelets, we speculate that these vacancies occur on the surface of the nanoplatlets and then distribute throughout the particle over time.
