A microwave-induced procedure for the preparation of 3-unsubstituted β-lactams is explored <i>via</i> aqueous trimethyl borane-mediated reaction of the xanthates. We have been engaged in the synthesis and biological evaluation of β-lactams for many 25 years. It is conceivable that 3-oxygen substituted β-lactams on deoxygenation can produce 3-unsubstituted β-lactams.
