Reducing the crude oil viscosity in petroleum is important to facilitate transportation and distribution. A new rheological research experiment was conducted in which an electric field was applied against the nanoparticles of petroleum crude oil, in order to lower the viscosity and increase flow rate. The electric field does not change the temperature of the crude oil, rather targets the nanoparticles and aggregates them into chains to change the properties of the oil. Thus, reducing the viscosity and pour point, which is a crucial index to reflect the properties of petroleum oil. The lower the pour point, the less energy required to liquefy the oil. The technology is cost efficient compared to other methods used by companies to keep the oil melted. Researchers are therefore aiming to find a way to optimize the process, and make the oils pour point at least five degrees lower. Reducing the pour point by applying an electric field is safer and more convenient than adding harsh chemicals which can be harmful and difficult to get rid of.
