Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been considered as a replacement for photomultiplier tubes in fluorescence detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE). However, fluorescence applications of the SiPM have typically use pulsed light sources requiring high bandwidth circuits and data acquisition that increase the overall cost. This research explores the use of a SiPM as a CE fluorescence detector using a constant power excitation laser, simple detection circuit, and low bandwidth data acquisition (10-100 kHz). A fluorescein detection limit of 10<sup>-20</sup> moles is achieved using a 50 µm inner diameter capillary. This sensitivity falls within an order of magnitude of the PMT on the same detection setup. The detection circuit consists of the SiPM chip, a single trans-impedance amplifier, a 30 V power supply and voltage regulators.  Owing to the low bandwidth requirements, an inexpensive analog to digital converter can be added to the chip for use with single board computers and microcontrollers. The low cost (&lt; $150) and high performance of the SiPM detector encourage its use for sensitive CE assays or microchip electrophoresis applications.<br/>
