The traditional synthesis of chlorophosphazenes typically involves large amounts of chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, which are highly toxic, costly to dispose of, and not good for the environment.  With this as a driving force, our group has decided explore greener methods in chlorophosphazene synthesis using mechanochemistry.  We have constructed a mechanochemistry mixing system using a vortex mixer to perform our initial investigations into the possibility that mechanochemistry could be used for synthesizing chlorophosphazenes. We are investigating the use of various additives to facilitate the reaction to overcome obstacles such as a high energy barrier and the need for chlorinated solvents.  The additives also may affect the   PCl<sub>5</sub> equilibrium products which appear to play an important role in chlorophosphazene synthesis.  The resulting products have been analyzed with spectroscopic analysis, x-ray crystallography, and quantum mechanical calculations.
